I'm proud of Mohamed, boasts Toulouse killer's brother
http://www.euronews.com/ The older brother of the Toulouse gunman who killed seven people said he was "proud" of Mohamed Merah's actions.
Abdelkader Merah told police he was present when the Yahama scooter used in the killings was stolen.
But he insists he had no prior knowledge of his brother's criminal plans
The 29-year-old and his girlfriend are being questioned by French intelligence officers in Paris.
Mohamed Merah's mother was also quizzed but has since been released.
Her lawyer said on Saturday that she was "wracked with guilt and full of remorse" for what her 23-year-old son did.
Merah murdered three Jewish children, a Rabbi and three French soldiers in an eight-day killing spree that has shocked France.
He himself was shot dead on Thursday after he opened fire on police fol...

STORYLINE
The partner of Mohamed Merah's brother, Abdelkader Merah, has been released from police custody according to her lawyer, who spoke to reporters on Sunday.
30-year-old Yamina Mesbah was released overnight, her lawyer Guy Debuisson said.
Debuisson went on to say that Mesbah does not suspect her husband of leading a double life and that during his frequent travels to Egypt he was studying Arabic.
"She said he would travel (to Egypt) to attend an Arab course and that she would join him like a wife joins a husband when he is away for a couple of months. She would join him for eight to ten days," Debuisson said.
Mesbah married Abdelkader Merah in an Islamic religious ceremony in 2006, but does not carry his last name. Their marriage is not recognised by French law.
"She learned details about his travels, she learned that apart from learning Arabic, he might have led a particular life in the practicing of his religion, a life that could have lead him to a particular type of extreme Salafi practice, a fundamentalist practice."
Abdelkader's brother Mohamed Merah died in a hail of gunfire on Thursday after a standoff with police during which he claimed responsibility for attacks that killed three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three paratroopers.
Merah claimed allegiance to al-Qaida and told police he travelled to
Afghanistan and Pakistan for training.
"The question to ask today is if Mohamed was the only one that was indoctrinated. Was it just him or are there others, that is now the issue" Debuisson said.

Christian Etelin, the former lawyer of Mohamed Merah, the Frenchman suspected of a spate of shootings in the Toulouse area spoke to reporters on Wednesday and gave more details about Merah's background.
Etelin, who has represented the 24-year-old Frenchman of Algerian descent on charges for crimes involving theft and violence in the past, said that Merah presented a persona which was "totally different from what you would perceive," despite the fact he was aware his client had gone to Afghanistan in 2010.
Etelin said he had warned Merah that the trip was likely to have been noticed by the authorities and would mark him out as suspicious.

You can be sure of one thing and that is you're under serious scrutiny, they won't forgive you anything," he recalled saying to Merah.
In spite of this warning, Etelin said Merah had remained evasive.
"He didn't want to give me any more details," he added.
Late on Wednesday, after 13 hours of negotiations, one French official said hundreds of police were ready to storm the building in Toulouse to end the continuing standoff.

STORYLINE:
The lawyer for the mother of the Frenchman accused of killing seven people in a series of shootings said her world has been turned upside down by the devastating events earlier in the week.
Jean-Yves Gougnaud, Zoulika Aziri's lawyer, told journalists on Saturday that "at no time could she have imagined that her son was the one who did it. She was even telling people around her to protect their kids, to watch them. She is really a caring person, she is extremely kind, and, as I said in this case, she really cooperated from the start."
Aziri was released without charge, a judicial official said on Saturday after being questioned by police concerning her son's killing sprees.
She was freed late on Friday, the official said on condition of anonymity because the information wasn't cleared for public release.
Aziri's son, Mohamed Merah, is blamed for a series of deadly shootings which have shocked France and upended the country's presidential race.
Merah, who claimed allegiance to al-Qaida, died in a hail of gunfire on Thursday after a dramatic 32-hour standoff with police in Toulouse.
He had filmed himself carrying out attacks in southern France that began on March 11 and killed three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three French paratroopers with close-range shots to the head, prosecutors say.
Another Jewish student and a paratrooper were wounded.
Gougnaud said that Merah's mother "needs an explanation. She needs to know if she could have prevented it."
One reporter asked Gougnaud why Aziri didn't speak to her son during police negotiations.
"She had had no contact with her son for a very long time and knew that he wouldn't listen to her and that it wouldn't help," was Gougnaud's response.
Investigators are trying to figure out whether the Frenchman, who is of Algerian descent, acted alone, and his older brother Abdelkader Merah, along with Abdelkader's girlfriend, remain in police custody in Paris.
Key questions include how Mohamed Merah, described by French intelligence boss Ange Mancini as "a little failure from the suburbs," was able to amass an arsenal of weapons, including an Uzi sub-machinegun, and rent a car, despite having no clear source of income.
Merah had claimed that neither his mother nor his brother knew of his plans, but police union spokesman Michel Crepin told reporters that detectives have already gathered evidence to suggest that Abdelkader may have helped his brother carry out the shootings.

(25 Mar 2012) 1. Exterior of Palais de Justice
2. Set-up of Anne-Sophie Laguens, lawyer for Abdelkader Merah
3. SOUNDBITE: (French) Anne-Sophie Laguens, lawyer for Abdelkader Merah:
"The hearing went smoothly. It lasted about an hour, the time for him to be questioned on the main facts, because of course it is an inquiry that is going to last a long time. He saw the judge about an hour ago and Mr. Merah was put in the state's custody."
4. Cutaway of media
5. SOUNDBITE: (French) Anne-Sophie Laguens, lawyer for Abdelkader Merah:
"He was charged, to be precise, with organised theft, complicity in murder, and criminal conspiracy. Beyond that, as for the rest, I don't find it useful at this stage to talk about it and give out important details."
6. Cutaway of Laguens
7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Anne-Sophie Laguens, lawyer for Abdelkader Merah:
"Now, he is in detention for a long moment I think, because the information will be quite long, the inquiry will be quite long. So, I will see him I think next week. He's pretty calm at the moment. He just wants to say that the things that have been said in the newspapers, that he may be ok with the fact that his brother has killed children, he has condemned that. He is of course not agreeing with those facts."
8. Various of Laguens
STORYLINE:
A lawyer said on Sunday that a Frenchman suspected of helping his brother plot attacks against Jewish schoolchildren and paratroopers knew nothing about what was going on.
A French judge filed preliminary murder and terrorism charges on Sunday against Abdelkader Merah, whose younger brother Mohamed claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Abdelkader is in custody and has not spoken publicly. His lawyer Anne-Sophie Laguens said that he was not aware of his brother's plans.
Laguens also denied reports that Abdelkader was proud of his brother's actions.
Investigators looking into the shootings believe Abdelkader helped prepare the killings and are investigating whether they were linked to an international network or worked on their own.
The shootings believed to have been carried out by Mohamed Abdelkader started on March 11, when a French paratrooper was killed by a lone gunman on a motorbike in the city of Toulouse.
Then on March 15, two French paratroopers were killed and one was seriously injured when a gunman on a motorbike shot them at a bank machine in Montauban, 50 kilometres (30 miles) from Toulouse.
Finally, on Monday, March 19, an attacker on a motorbike shot three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school in Toulouse.

http://www.euronews.com/ The older brother of the Toulouse gunman who killed seven people said he was "proud" of Mohamed Merah's actions.
He himself was shot dead on Thursday after he opened fire on police following a thirty-two hour siege of his apartment in the southwestern city.
Questions are being asked over how French intelligence failed to apprehend the Merah brothers, who were known to have links to radical Islamists.
It has forced national security straight to the top of the agenda ahead of next month's presidential election.
